My mother is 88, she has not been diagnosed with dementia (shows symptoms) is: forgetting names of grandchildren, mixes up brothers, how to write checks etc. She's not hurting for money, but I believe she has my jewlery and won't return it. This includes my wedding rings as well as other expensive and irreplaceable items. She collects junk mail from non-proper organizations and I'm afraid she's going to throw it out.

I forgot to ask you when did you first notice your jewelry was missing? Surprise just made an excellent point. It may already have been thrown out in the trash. I hope not.

Mthr and all of the other residents at her memory care love to enter the wrong room (by accident, they all look the same on the outside) and find pretty things they take with them. I'm sure they have no idea they are taking someone else's things - in their right mind, they would be horrified! The fact remains that they all steal utensils from the cafe and they all hide them in their sock drawer or night stand according to the director. Mthr had about 20 forks. One by one, someone else took her collection of very expensive academic journals I'd planned to donate ($100 ea for print copies, except she has a lifetime subscription)> I was mortified when I found only two left on her shelf! But I did remember that we are told not to leave valuables there at the home.

I'm guessing your things are hidden all over your house, not just in her room. First, put a lock on your door and then go through the garbage outside first, wadded up tissue by wadded up tissue. I'm sorry, but your valuables may already be in the dump. Keep at it!

Whether or not your mother is hurting for money honestly has NOTHING to do with this anyway. If your mother has squirrelled your jewellery away it's because for some reason she came to believe it was hers, perhaps temporarily, or because it was pretty and in that moment right then she wanted to collect it. It won't be some plot to sell it for charity or profit.

What conversations have you had with her about this?

Where does she keep her own jewellery and personal items?

I don’t think you have a choice. You have to do a search. I’m so sorry, especially about your wedding rings. That isn’t just jewelry. It represents your love for each other. No, it doesn’t define it but is a beautiful symbol of your love.

Get her out of your house somehow and then search her area. Don't throw trash out till you go thru it. If you find the pcs, lock your stuff up. You can put a lock on ur bedroom door.
