OMG, go get another doctor. There ARE treatments for MRSA that do work, but they are extremely expensive. Sounds like someone is trying to avoid spending some money -- they need to at least try to treat this infection! I bet the NH knows they won't get reimbursed for anything near what they will be paying their pharmaceutical supplier for those meds, and your mom's doctor knows this, so he's just not prescribing it. Either that, or he's a quack. You need to transfer mom to a different NH, too, since that one is clearly dirty. She would not have a MRSA infection, if there were any real infection control policies in place.

D-Mannose, which is available over the counter (I buy it on Amazon) is very effective with recurrent E. coli UTI infections. This has been proven in clinical trials.

D-Mannose is a kind of sugar that occurs naturally in cranberries, to which E. coli bacteria like to stick. D-Mannose isn't absorbed well by the body so it passes out of the body in the urine. While it is in the bladder, the E. coli bacteria will stick to the D-Mannose; then when one urinates, the D-mannose and E. coli pass out of the body together as a unit.

Here is one article, but there is a lots more information on the Internet:

I had my mother on this and it cleared up her problem-- and I take it myself.

I'm not a professional but in the cases at my father's facility we have had to use face masks; gowns and gloves until the antibiotics are complete. It can be passed person to person until controlled.

Do they have your mother in isolation at her memory care facility at this time to prevent passing it to other residents? If so be sure to watch for depression as well as it can creep up fast.

I'm glad you've got an option for another opinion, Mother. Please let us know how this goes. And remember, if she's in pain, you have to be the one making the noise to get her relief!

I just want to mention, with regard to Hospice, only a doctor can certify that your mother is eligible or not. A nurse or a social worker might offer an opinion, but in this situation, I wonder if the person who told you that she's not eligible knows/understands how I'll she is.

I would ask mom's doctor what s/he'd do if this were her mom. I've asked this question of doctors when they've given me a whole long list of things we "could" do. The "your mom" question has gotten me some very blunt and honest answers. Above all, as Pam says, the pain must be addressed at almost any cost.

It never hurts to get a second opinion, even if the opinion comes from a hospitalist. I agree with the above comment, sometimes doctor's skirt around the issue of death and dying. If there is nothing he can do, I'd ask him exactly what does he mean, if she is dying then what about comfort measures?

I absolutely agree with Babalou. If she is in pain with burning I would be making immediate arrangements to get her to the hospital and not waiting until Friday. If that is not feasible a call right into the doctor to get more information as to what exactly is going on and find out why he says there is nothing more he can do for her.

If your mom is in pain, get her some relief sooner than that. I would call and talk to the doctor on the phone; perhaps without your mom present at first would be easier for you both. Good luck!

Motherof5, what is he suggesting that you do? I think you need to ask him a very direct question about this. Is he saying that mom is dying? Sometimes doctors skirt around saying that, but it's time to ask. And if the answer is yes, time to call Hospice, I would think. My thoughts and prayers are with you both.

That is the bacteria that she got is resistant to antibiotics...I asked him about putting her in the hospital...but he said that's not a option for her...this is her primary doctor not one at the center...would taking her to a urology help..thank you so much for you kind answers...

E. Coli is a bacterium that is found in feces, both human and animal. It may be that this bacteria that she has is resistent to antibiotics. Is this the doctor at the assisted living facility? If so, I think you have two choices. You opt for more aggressive treatment by getting her to a hospital via ambulance or you opt for comfort care (painkillers and no treatment of the infection) by calling Hospice. I'm so sorry that your mom is in pain. If nothing else, RIGHT NOW, she should be on painkillers to ease that so that you can evaluate the situation.

He said that she got this because of all the antibiotic she has taking for the pass few years...and no antibiotic will help..he said that if he gives her antibiotics it will make it worse..

Do you mean that she has a UTI that they have determined is E. Coli based? Are they treating this with antibiotics? Please ask the doctor if by "nothing they can do about this" s/he is suggesting that Hospice be called.
