We lost our father a few weeks ago after a long illness at the age of 88. Our mother, with our help, cared for him everyday. The Doctor has put her on Xanax to help her rest. Our brother and his wife are friends with a few people who work at this CVS. They ask that they be the only people who can pick up her prescription from now on. My mother sent me to pick up other prescriptions for her and I was told that I could not. Only my mother or my brother. Our mother was very upset when I told her and she has since told the pharmacy and all is ok, but she asked the CVS how this could happen and he had no answer. My sister and I want to know was this legal?

lovex3, I doubt there is a law saying only certain people can pick up a prescription. When you think of the hundreds of people who stop by the drug store to get their pills or pills for family members.

The only way to work around this is for your Mom to get mail order prescription service where the pills are mailed directly to your Mom's address.

I wonder why your brother would say that he should be the only one to pick up Mom’s pills? What happened with her or your dad’s medications that he felt it was necessary? And it surprises me that your brother could call on his friendship with CVS employees to ask them to do something like that. If the store manager found out, I’d bet these employees would be in a lot of trouble.

I am very well-known at our local CVS because my husband is on a ton of medications, but I think if one of my kids tried to pick up his meds, they wouldn’t give them out without calling me. Not the way things are now with drugs.

I don’t believe what CVS did was actually illegal, it just wasn’t smart on their part. That may be why the pharmacist didn’t have an answer. He may have been afraid you’d report them to Corporate.

We use CVS. The pharmacy asked us to fill out a profile card. It asks who can pick up prescriptions. There is also a PIN we have to punch in before they will release prescriptions. PJ and I have each other listed, and his son who is an MD as our alternate.

That’s interesting, Becky. And a really good idea. I don’t recall ever having to do that here with CVS. I’m going to ask the next time I go.

CVS is a sloppy, faux pharmacy that actually sells suntan lotion and low quality vitamins.

They apparently do not train their pharmacy aids properly. You might want to find out why your sibling is doing this. Is someone interested in delivering the script to the rightful patient ‘a little light’? I mean get some out for themselves? That’s common since Xanax is the IT tranquilizer in the drug black market.

The DEA sees fit to make Xanax a Schedule IV Drug and it’s dispensed like jelly beans. People can make a nice sum diverting Xanax because it’s a great drug for your grieving mom (to take 1 when she needs it) but take 4 and the abuser is wasted and then many times have amnesia when they come to twelve hours later. DEA discernment is none existent. But anyway...

Hopefully I’m way off and it’s an ‘attack you’ opportunity where the relatives can gain favor or power or money for themselves. Get appointed POA, like that is fun in any way!

But this is true, there’s a booming black market for Xanax on the street. I think they go for $8-$10 a piece and I’ve wondered “Where do all those bonafide, pharmaceutical company grade pills come from?”

Keep your eyes on your relatives....

I guess I have a very conscientious physician. She refused to renew my prescription for that or Ambien when I went to see her. I’m not an abuser by any means. But unfortunately those that are have ruined it for the rest of us.

If you are in Ohio - that’s the new norm. My aunt and uncle live in Marietta. They were refused refills on my uncle’s pain med. He has colon cancer. He is not end stage, but got on palliative care so that he could get his pain med.
